Free Mac stuff and a bit of an info dump

I came across a cache of links I'd saved for follow-up and so, with my new de-cluttering regime, I share them here on the BoiseMacs weblog instead of hoarding them and letting digital dust accumulate. Some humor (old but still good): the Apple Product Cycle For if you're in a video/movie-watching mood: How to download YouTube videos with Safari -- How to connect your laptop to

Templates for Pages (including Avery)

Just looking around for a way to use my Avery 5160 labels and in googling found this iWork Community sharing site which had just what I needed. Looks like all sorts of templates for Apple Pages use.

When you need to bring back Apple Mail

This is a post brought over from Emma's Friends, a now retired Mac blog. Originally published 6/10/2008. Author CF. I should know this. Do not do not do not just go to your backup (whether it be an Archive and Reinstall "previous system", or an external drive). Don't just drag all those files in. Please remember {slapping forehead} to use what's provided: in Mail, go to file > import mailboxes Otherwise you get to sift through a mess of duplicate emails and mailboxes. Stupid!

Good? Bad? Safari 4 and how to hack it

Spotted on our list (thanks, Ed!): How to tweak Safari 4 (using Terminal).

Tricks with the dictionary / thesaurus widget in Leopard

This comes via Mark Winchester (printed with permission):
I don’t know if you use the dictionary/thesaurus widget much, but I found a couple of cool tricks with it that many have found helpful. If you aren’t sure about the spelling of a word, type in the first part you are sure of, then hit the Esc key – it will give you a list of completed words to choose from.

Get it while you still can (iMovie 6)

You may be amongst the hordes of folks less than happy with the "improvements" in iMovie '08. Recall that Apple heard and provided a free download area for iMovie HD 6, for those who wanted to revert. Well, that window of opportunity is closing. The page on Apple's site has been removed, as per this article, but you can still get the .DMG here.

How do I set up so I can use iChat?

As you'll have noticed, for December's meeting you have the option of staying safe and warm at home and using your iChat connection to connect with fellow members. iChat is a great software that has been available with Macs for a while and the newest version in Leopard is the best yet. If you've not used iChat, you will need an "iChat name." There are two paths to take, depending upon whether you have an Apple Me (formerly, .Mac) account or not. (Full instructions.

Mail and fancy signatures

Here's a tutorial (maybe not for beginners) on creating a custom CSS signature for your Mail.app emails. Sort of a middle ground between full-bore stationery (which slows stuff down unnecessarily, in my opinion) and Plain Jane text signatures (which can be boring, I suppose).

Finding missing photos in iPhoto

Excerpted from iPhoto 08 for Mac OS X: Visual QuickStart Guide by Adam C. Engst
If other iApps can't see your photos, or if some iPhoto albums or photos are missing, quit all the iApps, drag the file "AlbumData.xml" from the iPhoto Library to the desktop, launch iPhoto, create a new album, quit iPhoto, and try the other programs again.
