Free video for new Mac users

The excellent ScreenCastsOnline (to which I subscribe) is this week offering a hefty (that is, substantial) video podcast covering a lot of ground that would be very useful for new Mac users, whether they be recent switchers or folks who just haven't had a chance to dig around in all that the Mac offers as yet. Don always has a useful broadcast (it's one of my few "must watch" video podcasts) so take a peek at this free show and if you like it, consider

Extract the sound from a downloaded YouTube video

MacTips chimes in with an easy way to extract sound from a video.
In Save a YouTube video I explained one way to download a YouTube video. Others kindly chimed in with comments explaining alternatives. Once you have a video on your computer though, you may find you'd like to take just the sound and add it to iTunes.

When you need to bring back Apple Mail

This is a post brought over from Emma's Friends, a now retired Mac blog. Originally published 6/10/2008. Author CF. I should know this. Do not do not do not just go to your backup (whether it be an Archive and Reinstall "previous system", or an external drive). Don't just drag all those files in. Please remember {slapping forehead} to use what's provided: in Mail, go to file > import mailboxes Otherwise you get to sift through a mess of duplicate emails and mailboxes. Stupid!

Publish iCal calendars online (no .Mac account)

This is a post brought over from Emma's Friends, a now retired Mac blog. Originally published 05/16/2008. Author CF. This is a post brought over from Emma's Friends, a now retired Mac blog. Originally posted 02/25/2008. Author CF. Let me be straightforward: I've had unpleasant experiences in the past trying to install and operate (and most importantly, actually utilize) a MySQL database on my Macs.

After the horror (my iMac hard drive died)

Brought over from Emma's Friends, a Mac blog. Originally posted 02/25/2008. Author CF. It started when I was (as usual) running a zillion different things, having done the 10.5.2 mega update that morning -- but hey, I'd been luxuriating in the faster processing and the maxed-out RAM. What I remember most clearly about the beginning of the incident is that after I rebooted my hard drive icon and the icon of my external (Time Machine) HD would flash on and off, on and off. The dock spontaneously rose and fell a few times then rose no more.

Click contact links and reply in Google Mail or Yahoo

This is for a list member who'd asked about this. I just came across this page which explains that in Firefox 3 one can set "mailto" links within web pages to invoke your Google Mail or Yahoo Mail, if you don't want to use Apple Mail or Thunderbird or Eudora, etc.
Go to Tools > Options > Applications .. then search for "mailto" in the Content Type column.

Tricks with the dictionary / thesaurus widget in Leopard

This comes via Mark Winchester (printed with permission):
I don’t know if you use the dictionary/thesaurus widget much, but I found a couple of cool tricks with it that many have found helpful. If you aren’t sure about the spelling of a word, type in the first part you are sure of, then hit the Esc key – it will give you a list of completed words to choose from.
