Publish iCal calendars online (no .Mac account)

This is a post brought over from Emma's Friends, a now retired Mac blog. Originally published 05/16/2008. Author CF. Gave this a whirl and it actually work, but required a PW for the group to see so was too much of a hassle. But here is how you can publish an iCal calendar without needing a .Mac account or hosting that runs WebDAV. Addendum: Tried this with the BoiseMacs meetings page and turned out to be a hassle. I'd gotten a box.net account for the purpose but one needed a password, etc. Perhaps something to revisit but didn't go smoothly the first time.
